The Neighborhoods of Nashville

Nashville is much more than Music City. It’s a tapestry of neighborhoods, each with its own soul, flavor, and hidden gems. Whether you’re after live music, boutique shopping, historic charm, or creative energy, there’s a uniquely Nashville neighborhood waiting for you. Tourists often miss the hidden gems of the city so we are here to make sure you are well informed whether you are a visitor or a new local. Here’s a local’s guide to explore the city’s best:

Broadway (Downtown/Nashville Historic District)

Known as the heart of live music, Lower Broadway, or “Honky Tonk Highway”. is where neon-lit venues, classic honky-tonks, shops, and restaurants collide in perfect harmony.

From live honky tonk music playing all day and night long.. and all year long,  to historic buildings that have been re-imagined into musical venues, the vibe never misses on Broadway. No visit would be complete without visiting Lower Broadway, but that is not all there is to Downtown Nashville!

One can shop at a variety of local businesses such as The Arts Company on 5th Avenue North or Boots N’ More on Broadway. To eat and drink like a local, there are also numerous local places such as AJ’s Good Time Bar, which is a honky tonk bar, on Broadway and Moonshot Coffee Bar on Gay Street. If you want to rest up in a hotel, there is always the 21c Museum Hotel on 2nd Avenue North and Bobby Hotel on 4th Avenue North.

Nashville’s downtown has been named “Nashvegas” and with all the different activities to do, music to listen to, and places to see, there is no wonder why! Lower Broadway is the “activity center” of Nashville and will undoubtedly be the liveliest at all times. Locals try to avoid this area unless its a “wild night out” – but don’t let that stop you! Everyone should visit Lower Broad at least once during their stay in Nashville.

Printer’s Alley

Tucked between Third and Fourth Avenue in downtown Nashville, Printer’s Alley is a place where history and nightlife intertwine. Once the beating heart of the city’s publishing industry, this narrow stretch was home to Nashville’s largest newspapers and printing presses in the late 1800s. By the 1940s, the presses gave way to pianos, transforming the Alley into a hub for speakeasies, jazz clubs, and burlesque shows. It quickly gained a reputation as the city’s nightlife district, where stars, locals, and visitors rubbed elbows under neon lights and is one of the highlighted stops on our Nashville Experience Tours.

Today, Printer’s Alley still carries that moody, underground vibe. Walking through its brick-lined passage feels like stepping into another era. Live blues and jazz spill into the street from iconic venues like Skull’s Rainbow Room, where legends such as Etta James and Paul McCartney once graced the stage.

Printer's Alley

The Alley’s speakeasies serve up craft cocktails with a side of history, making it one of the best places to experience Nashville beyond Broadway’s bright lights. Whether you’re after a late-night adventure, a quiet cocktail, or a taste of the city’s storied past, Printer’s Alley offers a mix of grit, glamour, and timeless charm you won’t find anywhere else in Music City.

12 South

One of Nashville’s most walkable and stylish districts, 12 South is a boutique wonderland that perfectly blends Southern charm with modern flair. This half-mile stretch is lined with unique shops, award-winning restaurants, and some of the city’s most iconic murals, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors. Here you’ll find everything from locally owned boutiques showcasing Nashville designers to quirky coffee shops where you can sip a latte and people-watch. Foodies will be in heaven with options that range from gourmet popsicles at Las Paletas to indulgent bites like the legendary 100-layer donuts at Five Daughters Bakery. And, of course, you can’t miss snapping a photo at the “I Believe in Nashville” mural, one of the most recognized symbols of the city’s pride.

It’s a place where style meets substance, and where every corner offers another Instagram-worthy moment.

Music Row

The cinematic centerpiece of Nashville’s recording industry, Music Row is the beating heart of where country, rock, and pop music found their global stage. This historic district is lined with world-famous studios, record labels, and songwriter hubs, it’s quite literally the place where the music business grew up. Walking through the neighborhood, you’ll see unassuming buildings that hold stories of legends like Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and Taylor Swift, all of whom recorded their iconic hits here. It’s a neighborhood where music history isn’t just told, it’s still being made every single day.

At the edge of Music Row sits Demonbreun Street, where past kitsch meets modern nightlife. Here you’ll find dive bars, rooftop patios, and live music venues that carry the same creative energy spilling out of the studios. It’s the perfect place to imagine what it must have been like when the first big hits were born in the 1950s and 60s.
